Spiritual Formation

What is “spiritual formation”? It is the historical term used to help us understand the process for spiritual growth and transformation. The practices of spiritual formation are ancient, yet are being rediscovered by many Christians today. Spiritual disciplines help busy people with hectic lives and conflicting priorities continue to follow the biblical mandate of personal transformation: “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will” (Romans 12:2).

Spiritual formation is concerned with three areas:

  1. Knowledge and understanding (such as biblical history, theology, discernment, spiritual vocation, etc.)
  2. Spiritual practices (such as prayer, reflection, silence, etc.)
  3. Participation in community (such as liturgy, service, compassion, etc.)

How do we practice spiritual formation at Forest Brook?

  1. We encourage involvement in secondary learning contexts, such as Small Groups, Bible courses, Seminars, Retreats, etc. We believe that growth happens best in the context of smaller numbers of believers discussing, sharing and learning together.
  2. We encourage everyone to learn about “spiritual vocation”, including identifying and serving within the area of their unique spiritual giftedness (Romans 12:3-8; 1 Corinthians 12:12-31). We provide seminars and a trained mentoring program called Barnabas Ministry to help individuals uncover their gifts and spiritual calling.
